What Is a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is a procedure to remove damaged, decayed, or problematic teeth when no other treatment is possible. It helps prevent further pain, infection, and complications.
At Smile Studio Newstead in Brisbane, our team prioritizes your comfort during the extraction process, using advanced techniques to ensure a smooth and pain-free experience. While extraction is always a last resort, it provides quick relief when necessary.
Tooth extractions are commonly required when:
- A tooth is severely cracked, broken, or decayed.
- There is overcrowding of teeth.
- Infection has damaged the tooth or surrounding bone.
- Wisdom teeth are impacted or causing discomfort.

Who Requires a Tooth Extraction & How Does it Work?
Tooth extraction is often a necessary solution when a tooth cannot be saved through other treatments like fillings or root canals. This procedure is recommended for individuals experiencing:
- Severe tooth decay that has weakened the tooth structure.
- Dental trauma, such as cracks or fractures that cannot be restored.
- Infections or abscesses that have spread to the surrounding bone.
- Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or alignment issues.
What To Expect At Your Appointment
At Smile Studio Newstead, your comfort and safety come first. Here’s what to expect during the tooth extraction process:
1
Consultation & Assessment
Simply book an appointment online for your initial consultation. This involves a thorough assessment of the tooth in question. Dr. Cate Gerber (Dentist) will discuss your symptoms, take x-rays, and determine if extraction is the best solution.
If extraction is necessary, we will create a tailored plan to ensure the procedure is quick, pain-free, and successful.
2
The Extraction Procedure
Local anaesthesia will numb the tooth and surrounding area, ensuring you feel no pain during the process—only pressure.
Our experienced team gently rocks the tooth to loosen it from the socket before removal. For complex cases, we may refer you to trusted oral surgeons for extraction under general anaesthesia in a hospital setting.
3
Post-Procedure Care
A sterile healing pack is placed in the socket to promote clot formation and healing.
You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions, including avoiding rinsing, hot liquids, and straws for the first 24 hours to protect the blood clot.
Pain relief and ice packs will help manage swelling and discomfort. Rest is essential for the first 24 hours, and physical activity should be limited to support healing.

Let's answer some frequently asked questions.
Saying goodbye to a tooth can be tough- and the decision is never taken lightly.
But should the need arise, whether it’s a wisdom tooth , or four, or a tooth so badly broken it can’t be saved, we will try and make the process painless and forgettable.
Some teeth are removed because they are so infected and broken down they cannot be restored, other times a wisdom tooth may be so poorly positioned it cant be cleaned and we make the recommendation to remove it when you are young, fit and healthy and do it on your terms.
There are a number of dental issues that can travel to neighboring teeth and other parts of the mouth if they remain unaddressed. The best way to keep the dental disease or decay from spreading would thus be to remove the compromised tooth entirely. The removal of compromised teeth might therefore be necessary to assure overall oral health. Studies also show that a severely decayed tooth can cause intense discomfort and pain; the extraction of it thus alleviates the patient’s discomfort.
With local anaesthesia, the procedure itself is painless. You may feel pressure, but no pain. Post-procedure discomfort is manageable with prescribed pain relief and ice packs.
A single tooth extraction usually takes 30-60 minutes. For multiple teeth, the process can take up to 2 hours.
Most patients recover within 1-2 weeks. Healing begins immediately, and the first 24 hours are crucial for clot formation.
After a tooth extraction, it’s best to stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours. Cold options like yogurt or applesauce are ideal. Gradually reintroduce solid foods over the next few days, depending on your comfort level and your dentist’s advice.
Yes, tooth extractions are a routine and safe dental procedure when performed by experienced professionals, like our dedicated team at Smile Studio Newstead in Brisbane.
Replacing an extracted tooth is recommended to avoid shifting teeth, bone loss, and chewing issues. Options include dental implants, bridges, or dentures.
At Smile Studio Newstead, led by Principal Dentist Dr. Cate Gerber, we offer safe and professional tooth extractions for residents of Brisbane and surrounding areas. Dr. Gerber, a Brisbane local, graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science in 2001 and has over 20 years of experience in dentistry. You should avoid brushing near the extraction site for the first few days. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid toothpaste directly on the area to prevent dislodging the blood clot. After about a week, you can gently clean the area as advised by your dentist.
It’s recommended to sleep with your head slightly elevated, using extra pillows. This helps reduce swelling and prevents blood from pooling around the extraction site. Lying flat may increase discomfort or prolong healing.
Saltwater rinses are crucial for keeping the extraction site clean and free of bacteria. You should continue rinsing gently for at least one week or as instructed by your dentist, especially after eating.
Typically, gauze should stay in place for 30-45 minutes after the procedure to help stop bleeding. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and apply firm pressure. Remove the gauze once the bleeding has slowed or stopped.
Wisdom tooth extractions often require a surgical approach because these teeth are commonly impacted or partially erupted. Regular tooth extractions are usually less invasive and can often be done without surgery, depending on the tooth’s condition.
